The Arizona State Legislature approved a bill Thursday that would require presidential candidates to prove they are American citizens before they are put on the ballot.
The measure arises amidst the current controversy over President Barack Obama’s birth certificate and its legitimacy. Critics contend Obama was born in his father’s home country of Kenya simply because the document does not list the doctor and hospital’s name.
The legislation, if signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, would keep Obama off the ballots in Arizona for the presidential race of 2012. Fourteen other states are considering similar legislation this year, according to a senior fellow with the National Conference of State Legislature.
Donald Trump is a big supporter of the bill, as he has been making headlines recently asking for additional proof of Obama’s birthplace. Trump is also a possible Republican candidate in the 2012 presidential election.
